last night’s service with troy marshall was hilarious! i couldn’t stop laughing at some of the examples he gave. he really got some sense of humour to keep everyone awake during service. hmm..
troy marshell talked about the spiritual gifts yesterday, specifically on the subject of “tongues”.
here’s the opening verse:
1 Cor 12:1 — Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
then, he emphasized on the word “ignorant”.
pastor told us not to ignore the spiritual gifts, because it is very important in our life. i think that is not what the verse actually meant!
Gr. for ignorant is agnoeo. it means to ignore, and not to know due to the lack of information.
but pastor did not mentioned 1 Cor 12:2 at all, which was quite important in order to find out what 1 Cor 12:1 actually meant.
1 Cor 12:2 — Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.
the Corinths were not using the spiritual gifts in the right way, Paul told them that they may be led by the devil! indeed, the Corinthians in Corith church were ignorant about the spiritual gifts. Paul wrote a letter to the church, to give advice on the proper usage of spiritual gifts.
so v.1 simply tells us that we need to know the proper usage of spiritual gifts, not to be ignorant and be led by idols (after referring to v. 2). v1 is NOT telling us that spiritual gifts are important, and that we must use them in our lives. (even though i know that the gifts are important!)
pastor then started his subject on speaking in tongues. he explained these verses:
1 Cor 2:7 – But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory
1 Cor 14:2 — For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
he elaborated the word “mystery” by giving some other verses. eg: the mystery of his will, the mystery of Christ, the mystery of the gospel.
he said that we (all Christian) speak in an unknown tongue, because it is a mystery. we are speaking mysteries so that the devil won’t know what we are praying about.
but hey, wait a minute.. how can pastor say that “we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery” means we are speaking in tongues? tongues is NOT equals to the wisdom of God. in addition, i think 1 Cor 2:7 is NOT about tongues at all!
the wisdom of God in the gospel was a mystery hidden until Christ came, and since then fully comprehended only by the initiated, the full-grown Christians. The apostolic sense of mystery is that which was hidden, but is now disclosed to those who accept the gospel.
– People’s New Testament
isn’t that true that the mystery was already revealed to those who accepted the gospel?? so if this is true that the mystery was already disclosed, does it mean that we can all interpret tongues? NO! then, 1 Cor 2:7 and 1 Cor 14:2 are not parallel!
let’s look at a few bible verses:
Ro 16:25 – Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began
the mystery was revealed!
Eph 1:9 — Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself
the mystery was made known unto us!
Col 1:26 – Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints
mystery made manifest to his saints!
now.. the mystery of the “mystery” in 1 Cor 2:7 is solved! =D
i’ve covered 1 Cor 14:2 in my older posts. to find out more about tongues in my previous posts, click on the tag “tongues” on the right sidebar, or click here.
then pastor talked about “regular faith” and “holy faith”. I believe that my faith is holy, and there should not be different kinds of faith(s). since the bible is holy, my faith in Christ Jesus is holy. i think, and according to the bible, there is no such thing as having “holy faith” to speak in tongues.
remember that faith is not the way, but Jesus is the way?
please leave a comment if you’ve anything to discuss regarding tongues! =)
p/s: if you’ve read the previous post, i think i’ve a new name for my “church”. it shall be called the “Grace Evangelical Church” and it will be non-denominational! (ya ya.. yuting said a non-denom church is a denom)
